An abstract, artistic representation of architectural design

From Sketch to Product: The Design Process

How does a magnificent stone facade become a delicate illustration on a coffee mug? It's a question we get asked often, and it lies at the heart of Bombay Gothic's creative spirit. The process is a journey of observation, art, and translation—from architectural marvel to everyday curio.

Step 1: Observation and Sketching

It all begins on the streets. As a conservation architect, my eye is trained to see not just the building, but its character—the rhythm of its arches, the texture of its stone, the play of light and shadow. The first step is always to capture this essence in a series of detailed, hand-drawn sketches. This is where we distill the soul of the structure into lines and forms.

Step 2: Digital Illustration and Composition

The raw sketches are then brought into the digital realm. Here, we refine the lines, compose the cityscape, and begin to play with color. For the "Where Lines Meet Colour" series, this involves creating a strong monochrome base before infusing it with a single, vibrant pop of color. For "Bombay Bohemian," it's about building layers of earthy, nostalgic hues that evoke a specific mood.

"The goal is not to replicate the building, but to translate its story and feeling into a piece of functional art."

Finally, the artwork is meticulously adapted to fit the unique canvas of each product—be it a candle, a diary, or a tote bag. Every item is designed to be more than just functional; it's a piece of Bombay's story, a tangible connection to the city's magnificent heritage, ready to be a part of your everyday life.
